Our Story
The origins of Starr Youth Theatre can be traced back to 1996, when a 6 year old girl saw the transformative magic of theatre for the first time and turned to her mother and said "I could do that."
Every artist tends to be the sum of all collaborators they have met along the way, and for SYT it's no different. For Becka (our Founder & Artistic Director) - it couldn't be more true.
"During a childhood of theatre summers in Beatrice, Nebraska I was so lucky to meet, connect, and learn from some incredible mentors - however I was truly changed when I met Paul Pearson. Paul was a true visionary who believed that when you empowered kids to be themselves and create authentically, that is where you found the true theatre magic.
What made Paul extraordinary wasn't just the productions he created—it was the children he helped to grow. He taught us that authenticity isn't something you perform; it's something you protect. He held up a mirror that reflected our strengths, challenged us to grow, and made us feel safe enough to become more fully ourselves. He made those that knew him feel seen, heard, and trusted."
Through that transformative experience, Becka knew from early on that her life's dream was to pass on the same lessons that were so integral for her upbringing to the next generation of artists.
Since graduating from Doane University in 2012, Becka has been a freelance theatre artist teaching workshops, directing shows, creating afterschool programming, and even teaching dance.
SYT is the next step in the dream of bringing more theatre magic into the lives of more kids.
We are so excited to join the already vibrant Lincoln theatre scene and share our unique approach to children's theatre with our amazing community.
Why Starr?
Our name is in homage to the performing persona of Paul Pearson, Buddy Starr.
A theatre icon, Lincoln legend, and LGBTQ+ pioneer.

Founder & Artistic Director
Becka brings over a decade of professional theatre experience to Starr Youth Theatre. Her vision of empowering young artists to create authentically and protect their unique voices is the heartbeat of our program.
The Board of Directors
We are eagerly searching for a talented, diverse, and motivated group to make up our inagural Board of Directors.
Board of Directors serve two year terms.
Positions available include: Board Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, and Members at Large.
